How to Choose a Dash Cam: 1, 2 or 3 Cameras?
Share
A dash cam is one of the simplest ways to protect yourself on the road. When something happens, clear video shows what really took place, instead of your word against someone else's. But with so many options, the first question is simple: how many cameras do you actually need?
1 camera: front only
A single front-facing camera records the road ahead. It covers the most common situations: a car running a red light, a sudden lane change or someone braking hard in front of you. For everyday commuting, it is the easiest setup to install and the most affordable.
Best for: daily commuters and first-time buyers.

2 cameras: front + rear
Rear-end collisions are among the most frequent accidents. A rear camera records what happens behind you, which is exactly where a front-only dash cam is blind. It also captures tailgaters and parking-lot bumps.
Best for: city drivers, families and anyone who parks on the street.
3 cameras or more: front, cabin and rear
A 3-channel system adds a cabin-facing camera, usually with infrared LEDs so it can record clearly in a dark car. This is the setup of choice for rideshare and delivery drivers, who need a record of what happens inside the vehicle as well as outside.
Best for: Uber, Lyft and delivery drivers, and parents who want to keep an eye on the back seat.
Other features to check
- Resolution: 4K makes license plates easier to read; 1080P is fine for rear cameras and budget setups.
- Night vision: essential if you drive after dark.
- G-Sensor: automatically locks footage when an impact is detected, so it is not overwritten.
- Parking mode: keeps recording while you are away. It requires a hardwire kit.
- WiFi app: lets you view and download clips on your phone.
- GPS: records speed and location, useful for insurance claims.
Our recommendation
If you are unsure, start with a front + rear setup: it covers the vast majority of everyday incidents. If you carry passengers for work, go straight to a model with a cabin camera.
